IQ.AI by FTI Technology Delivers Image Categorization, Review and Metadata Validation in 72 Hours for Urgent Intellectual Property Theft Case
An intellectual property theft litigation required processing and review of mobile device images and 45,000 photographs with low value metadata. With only a weekend to respond, FTI Technology applied IQ.AI to process and categorize the content for responsiveness.
Situation
In legal proceedings, the data production set included a large volume of images, audio and video files, and chat data. Many of the files collected were from personal devices, requiring categorization and separation of personal images and other data unrelated to the IP at the heart of the dispute. A large number of images were identified at a late stage, making manual review near impossible by the impending deadline.
These forms of electronic evidence are typically difficult to process and review; and in this scenario, there was the added challenge of an incredibly tight turnaround time of 72 hours to provide responsiveness categorization for all images, with descriptions and justifications for relevance.
Our Role
With only a weekend to deliver results, a team of e-discovery consultants and data scientists leveraged IQ.AI for Emerging Data Sources and IQ.AI for Enrichment to deploy advanced image prediction algorithms. The team advised the client on the workflow strategy to optimize the findings and fully tap into the power of generative artificial intelligence.
The solution combined generative AI capabilities with human expertise, providing an alternative to traditional optical character recognition solutions and delivering:
- A semi-supervised image categorization system that processed 10,000 images per hour, providing classification for each image and detailed descriptions of what the image contained and why it was considered to be responsive to the matter.
- First pass review of 45,000 images in less than three days.
- Video transcription provided on 8,000 video files to enable searching and review prioritization based on duration.
- Adaptive framework to incorporate attorney feedback throughout the process.
- AI-led quality control with human oversight, which uncovered additional file categories that were not in the original search parameters, validated relevance across the data set and provided an auditable trail for defensibility.
Our Impact
IQ.AI enabled a thorough and defensible review of responsive images and saved the client more than 375 work hours compared to manual image review, resulting in an estimated $15,000 cost savings while meeting stringent deadlines. The workflow provided improved confidence and accuracy over human categorization by providing explicit reasoning for each determination and flagging potentially responsive materials that may have otherwise been overlooked.
FTI Technology’s experts offered technical oversight and guidance to ensure quality and consistency and documented the process to validate the findings for the client and court.
